It's just a matter of practice. Listen to Qur'an tapes and recite along with them. The more you practice, the more your tongue will become accustomed to the words and the sounds, and the easier it will become. Also, try to look up or learn the words you don't know. This way the recitation will also become a form of Arabic learning and training. May Allah reward you.

Thanks for the reminder that we need to be conscious and aware in our prayers, and not just chimps - ha, ha. It's a good parable. Although, who knows what was in the chimp's heart? They are very intelligent animals.

Several months ago, I was listening to an essay on NPR called "Giving a Name to the Pain of Losing a Child" by Karla Holloway. She said that there are no words in the English language to describe a parent that has lost a child yet we many other words which describe similar situations.

A woman who loses her husband is a widow.
A man who loses his wife is a widower.
A child that loses a parent is an orphan.

It seems our society doesn't know how to talk about this issue.

The essay begins about 2min 15 secs in. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5511147

May Allah subhanahu wa ta ala protect you and your family.

assalaamu alaykum,

i empathize. each ramadan i really want to read my daily juz in arabic, and i've tried more than once, but subhanAllah it's just plain hard and sloooow going. so i have always ended up reading it through in english. inshaAllah some day it will be easy, or at least easy enough to read a juz a day. it reminds me how important it is to me to raise my children up so that reading arabic is as easy for them as english. as for the whole understanding what they're reading bit, that's a whole other challenge...
